Course Summary

This two-day Gold Seal Certified Course is designed for construction estimators and those with experience in construction that desire to be estimators or improve their knowledge of estimating.  Participants will learn skills and knowledge to estimate construction projects and prepare a successful bid.

Successful participants will be issued a Gold Seal certificate worth 5 credits.

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Analyze projects and decide on which ones to bid
  • Understand risk analysis and how to price this into a bid
  • Do competitor analysis and understand how this impacts the bid
  • Do client risk analysis and how to price this into bids
  • Record material and other prices and maintain contact lists
  • Formulate a bid strategy
  • Understand how to prepare an estimate and the estimating process
  • Use Construction Division Codes
  • Understand how to present a bid
  • Be familiar with how to use the bid depository
  • Understand the requirements for bonding and insurance
  • Understand the post-bidding process
  • Work with project managers to pass on knowledge of the bid

Change Order Management

Course Summary

Changes are an inevitable part of the construction process but if not managed well, change orders can cause unnecessary project disruptions and lead to cost increases and schedule delays. This Gold Seal Certified Course will provide participants with best practices for successfully navigating this complex project management challenge.

Successful participants will be issued a Gold Seal certificate worth 1 credit.

Construction Law

Course Summary

In this two-day Gold Seal Certified Course, participants will develop an understanding of contract law as it relates to construction and the various CCDC/CCA and other contracts used within the industry. Participants will also learn how the BC Builders Lien Act works and the other legal means to resolve construction disputes and avoid litigation.

Successful participants will be issued a Gold Seal certificate worth 5 credits.

  • Understand the basics of contract law -intention, offer, acceptance, consideration, capacity and legality

Construction Blueprint Reading

Course Summary

Participants will learn how to read a set of construction blueprints and specifications. Using both residential and commercial samples of blueprints, participants will gain experience and practical knowledge for their day-to-day work in construction companies. This Gold Seal Certified Course is ideal for those who have little or no background in blueprint reading.

Successful participants will be issued a Gold Seal certificate worth 1 credit.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Have an elementary knowledge of blueprint reading as it relates to building construction projects
  • Understand in general terms the design process and the role of design professionals
  • Understand how Building Codes and Bylaws impact blueprints

Communication Skills

Course Summary

This 2-day Gold Seal Certified Course is designed to improve skills in communication for supervisors and management in the office and in the field.

Participants will be able to identify and practice skills needed for effective communication and learn about barriers to communication. They will also learn about different communication styles and identify what their dominant style is as well as how to deal with people who have a different style of communication. The course material also provides insight about anger and how to manage it as well as help develop the skills required to supervise others.
